What is Manus? Everything you need to know

By SubPlaza

What is Manus, what can it do, how does it work, and who is it for? This easy-to-follow guide gives you a complete introduction to the Manus AI Agent in 2026.

If you see Manus for the first time, you might mistake it for just another chatbot. In fact, it's more like an AI assistant that can take on a complete task: you tell it your goal, and it will break it down into steps, search for information, use cloud-based computers, process files, and compile the results into reports, slides, websites, or other deliverables. You don't need to learn all its features at once—just understanding what it excels at is enough to get started.

Get to Know Manus in 30 Seconds

Simply put, Manus is an AI assistant that can actually get things done. It doesn’t just answer "how to do it"—it can search online for information, process files, create slides, write code, or build websites. If your task involves multiple steps and requires a ready-to-use final output, Manus is often a better fit than a regular chat tool.

What exactly is Manus?

Manus is a general-purpose AI Agent. Regular chat tools mainly provide text responses, while an Agent performs a series of actions to achieve a goal—like opening web pages, comparing information, writing code, generating files, running programs, or deploying websites. It also shows you its progress, so you can see what it's doing and invites you to participate when choices or approvals are needed.

How Does Manus Complete Tasks?

  • It understands your goal and breaks the large task into smaller steps.
  • It selects the appropriate models, browsers, cloud environments, or third-party data sources.
  • It gradually executes searches, analyses, file processing, or code operations.
  • It checks intermediate results and adjusts the plan when encountering issues.
  • It outputs reports, tables, slides, web pages, or downloadable files.

What’s the Difference Between Chat Mode and Agent Mode?

Chat mode is suitable for quick Q&A, rewriting, summarization, and discussions—usually lighter and consumes fewer credits. Agent mode is for tasks that require actual execution, such as researching multiple sources, making presentations, organizing data, or building websites. A simple rule of thumb: if you just need an answer, use Chat; if you want Manus to get things done for you, use Agent.

Key Capabilities of Manus in 2026

Capability

What It Can Do for You

Deep Research

Search, compare, and organize information on a topic

Wide Research

Break down complex problems into parallel subtasks, covering more items

Slides

Generate a well-structured presentation from a topic and materials

Website / App

Generate and deploy a website or app prototype

Browser Operator

Complete multi-step operations within a browser

Files & Data

Read documents and spreadsheets, generate analysis and downloadable results

Scheduled Tasks

Execute monitoring, aggregation, or reminder tasks repeatedly as scheduled.

Why is Wide Research worth paying attention to?

When a task can be broken down into many similar subproblems, Wide Research allows multiple sub-agents to work in parallel. For example, comparing dozens of products, researching markets in multiple countries, or analyzing a batch of companies at once. Its advantage is broader coverage, but it also consumes more credits. It is currently a paid feature. For tasks that only require checking a simple fact, there is no need to specifically use it.

Manus's advantages and points to note

Comparison perspective

Actual experience

Advantages

Can continuously complete multi-step tasks, with diverse output formats, and a relatively transparent process.

Advantages

Suitable for research, slides, websites, and document processing, reducing the need to switch between tools

Things to note

Complex tasks consume more credits, and results still require manual review

Things to note

When involving account, file, or browser operations, only grant necessary permissions

Understanding credits: the most important thing before using Manus

Manus charges credits based on the model tokens, cloud virtual machine time, and third-party API resources actually used by a task. Complex, time-consuming tasks involving repeated web browsing tend to cost more. Saving your results after task completion does not deduct further credits; if a task fails due to a technical issue on Manus’s end, the official policy states that corresponding credits will be refunded. To save credits, clearly define the scope, target format, and constraints before letting it run.

Can Manus be used for free?

Yes. The current Free plan costs $0 and includes Chat mode, Manus 1.6 Lite Agent, 300 daily refreshed credits, 1 concurrent task, and 2 scheduled tasks. The official help center also states that new users receive 1,000 free credits upon registration. The free version is great for trying out a few real small tasks before deciding whether to upgrade.

It’s not suitable for every task

Manus can boost efficiency, but that doesn’t mean results are always correct. For high-stakes information like pricing, regulations, medical, or financial data, you still need to verify against original sources; when letting the agent log into websites or operate local files, only grant necessary permissions. For very simple questions, using chat mode directly is often faster and more economical.

If you’ve already tried the free version and are sure you’ll keep using Manus, but don’t want to take on a higher official subscription cost all at once, you can compare more flexible Manus plans on Subplaza. It’s still best to start with your own real tasks: if you only use it occasionally, stick with the free version; only when credit limits or model capabilities start affecting your work should you consider paying—that way you’ll feel more at ease.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the biggest difference between Manus and ordinary AI chat tools?

Ordinary chat tools focus more on answering questions, while Manus’s Agent mode focuses more on planning and executing complete tasks.

Will installing the desktop version give me extra credits?

No. The desktop and web versions share the same account credits, and leaving the app open in the background does not automatically consume credits.
